The World and Travel

A traveler's guide to the continent of Vashrath, its five great cities, and what it truly costs to move between them.

A continent no one chose

Nobody sails to Vashrath. The Forgotten Realms lie beyond the portal, and every dweller either awoke on its shores or crossed over knowing there is no road back. What waits on the other side is an entire continent: misted beaches in the east, frozen mountains in the north, dense forest at its heart, sun-scorched steppes in the west and a volcanic coastline to the south.

Five great cities anchor that wilderness. Almost everything between them belongs to the monsters.

The five cities

Cripta

The gate-city of the east coast, and the largest and most crowded settlement in the known world. Cripta rose around an ancient castle built over a forgotten crypt, where sand, mist-covered hills and the edge of the forest meet. King Sangezer rules here, and the forward camp outside its walls is where nearly every newcomer takes their first steps. The hunting grounds around Cripta are the gentlest Vashrath has to offer — which is not saying much.

Frostown

The northernmost city, wedged between mountains of ice and the ash desert. It is the coldest place a traveler can reach, and it exists for one reason: what sleeps inside the ice. Frostown's mines yield rare metals that behave like no ordinary ore, and its frozen depths are the known origin of the Ancestral Detritus — the rare stones the realm treats as its most precious currency. Inside the gates you will find heated halls and busy forges. Outside them, the cold does not negotiate.

Valdren

The far west: dry steppes, brutal heat, and a coastline that seems to go on forever. Valdren is less a walled city than a sprawling land of camps, caravans and corrals, gathered around the monumental Sand Castle. It is famous for its horses — hardy lines said to survive nowhere else — and infamous for the islands offshore that no ship ever manages to reach. Many call it the edge of the world.

Veskar

The great port of the south-southwest, and the second-largest city in Vashrath. Veskar asks no questions about your blood or your past: humans, orcs, elves, dwarves, exiles and worse share its docks under the iron watch of the Comodoro. The city lives from the sea — fishing, sea hunts, shipyards, trade — while a volcano smolders on the horizon as a reminder that beauty here always carries a threat.

Kharvoss

The fortress-city at the heart of the lowland forests, and the most militarized place in the known world. House Kova rules; the orc king Jovel commands an army of many peoples; dwarven artisans work its forges. The forest around Kharvoss is rich in materials and richer in things that kill. Its surroundings are widely considered the deadliest hunting grounds a hero can walk.

What travel really costs

The cities are real destinations, not entries in a menu. Every journey between them costs gold for the passage and hours of your day spent on the road — and while you travel, you travel. Your hero is committed to the crossing until arrival.

A few habits make the road kinder:

  • Plan before you pay. Finish your business in a city before leaving it; going back is a second fare and a second wait.
  • Distance matters. Neighboring cities are a short hop; crossing the continent is an undertaking.
  • A mount changes everything. Mounts shorten the road and let you carry more, turning a long crossing into a manageable one.

Why travel at all

Because each city keeps things found nowhere else:

  • Its own expeditions. Every region has its own monsters, its own dangers and its own spoils. The farther you push from Cripta, the fiercer the hunts become — travelers usually brave Frostown first, then Valdren, then Veskar, and leave Kharvoss for last.
  • Its own markets and wares. Merchants stock differently from city to city, and the flow of goods follows the region's character.
  • Its own materials. Crafters who want the finest ores, hides and reagents follow them to their source (see /wiki/how-to-play/professions-and-crafting).
  • The realm's great threats. World bosses surface anywhere on the map, and reaching them is a journey in itself (see /wiki/how-to-play/world-bosses-guide).

To master Vashrath is to move across it. Pack well, bank what you cannot afford to lose (see /wiki/how-to-play/economy-and-trade), and treat every road as part of the adventure — because here, it is.
