Frostown

The frozen mining city of Vashrath's far north, where rare metals and the mysterious Ancestral Detritus sleep beneath the ice.

Frostown is the northernmost city of the known lands of Vashrath, raised between frozen mountains, ash-grey valleys and regions so cold that many travelers once believed no lasting settlement could ever survive there.

The land is vast but merciless. Cold rules everything. Game is scarce, fishing is limited, animals hide in deep burrows, and every path is flanked by wastes. Most who passed through judged that no one in their right mind would try to live there. Some stayed anyway.

Those first settlers discovered that the true worth of Frostown lay not in fertile soil or plentiful food, but in what slept inside the ice. The frozen mountains of Vashrath are rich in rare ores, heavy metals and mineral formations that do not behave like the common metal of the rest of the continent. Everything drawn from them seems to carry more resistance, more density and more promise at the forge.

In time, Frostown ceased to be an improbable shelter and became a mining city. Smiths, travelers, merchants and dwarves began crossing the cold in search of the northern metals. The city grew not because it was comfortable, but because it was useful. In Vashrath, that is often enough.

History

Frostown was born of stubbornness — of travelers who chose to remain where most only passed through. The region did not favor ordinary life. The cold killed crops, drove off animals and broke any simple supply line. Yet the ice hid wealth.

The discovery of the northern metals changed everything. Land once dismissed as useless became precious. Small extraction camps rose near the mountains; then came workshops, shelters, warehouses, trading posts and guarded routes. Dwarves were drawn by the quality of the metal and by the chance to work materials that existed nowhere else. Great mining masters organized the digs, took control of the richest veins and, with time, became the backbone of the city's administration.

Frostown was not founded by a king. It was founded by need, greed, cold and metal.

The Ancestral Detritus

Frostown is known as the most reliable origin of the Ancestral Detritus, noble stones of unknown provenance. Vashrath is itself a world displaced from the common one, yet the Ancestral Detritus seems to come from somewhere farther still. Nobody knows where these stones truly arise, but their worth is honored everywhere.

Even here they remain rare — not found in every mine, nor carried by every merchant — and reserved for trades of the highest value, exclusive exchanges, bribes and truly uncommon acquisitions.

Government

Frostown has no king. The city runs on great miners, extraction chiefs, forge masters and merchants who control the region's vital resources. Local order exists because it must: a disorganized mine dies, a forge without coal, metal and hands falls silent, and a shelter without discipline freezes from the inside. The administration is pragmatic to the bone — who works, eats; who produces, stays; who disrupts, is turned out into the cold.

Its military strength is modest beside a power like Cripta. Frostown relies instead on its natural defenses: glaciers, blizzards, narrow passes and killing cold do the work that walls and legions do elsewhere.

The Three Forces

Frostown is a city marked by the Northern Warriors. The region rewards physical strength, endurance, bodily discipline and brute labor — mining, hauling ore, forging, crossing snow and simply surviving the frost. Most of the city leans toward that Force, whether openly or by tradition.

The other Forces struggle to take root. The People of the South negotiate metal and keep trade contacts, but their social influence is thin. The Wanderers avoid long stays, for the territory does not favor their usual webs of shadow, passage and urban concealment.

It is said that Heidr, leader of the Northern Warriors, once lived in or passed through Frostown — though no one can say whether that is fact, myth or local propaganda.

Landmarks

  • The ice mountains — source of the rare metals that give Frostown its worth.
  • The ash desert — a grey, hostile expanse that precedes part of the frozen lands.
  • The forges of Frostown — workshops where ice-born metal is turned into arms, armor and tools.
  • The old mines — deep structures tied to the city's origin, many long abandoned and spoken of only in whispers.
  • The travelers' posts — heated shelters for those crossing the north.
  • The ore warehouses — guarded depots for metals, tools and trade cargo.
  • The veins of Ancestral Detritus — rare extraction points of the noble stones.
  • The frozen passes — dangerous routes binding the city to the wilds of the north.

Notable figures

  • The Great Miners of Frostown — the masters of extraction who keep the city alive and working.
  • The Forge Masters of Frostown — those who turn frost metal into weapons, armor and tools of superior make.
  • Sir Hedrick — possibly born in Frostown, though not even he knows for certain; his age and broken memory blur his origin.
  • Ragnar Frostborn and Kaelen Frost — figures of the frozen wilds, bound to the north itself more than to the city.
  • Heidr — legendary leader of the Northern Warriors, tied to the region by rumor alone.

Inside the gates there are heated halls, forges, taverns and rest for those who arrive alive. Outside them, the cold does not negotiate. The city survives on warmth, work and fellowship — and everything around it insists that the north was never meant to welcome anyone.
