Cripta is the largest and busiest city known to the Forgotten Realms, raised on the eastern coast of Vashrath, where sand, forest and mist meet before the continent turns truly hostile. Its name comes from the ancient castle that gave the city its beginning: a fortress built over a forgotten crypt, rarely entered and wrapped in a folklore the people prefer not to discuss out loud.
The city is said to be around eleven hundred years old, though nobody treats that age as certain. In Vashrath, time does not behave. Records contradict one another, bloodlines are lost, ruins look older than they should, and entire peoples cannot say whether they were born here or came from somewhere else. The age of Cripta is accepted as tradition, not as fact.
Whoever passes its gates learns the simplest rule of Vashrath: inside the walls there is order; outside them, almost everything wants you dead.
History
Before it was a city, the region was a natural meeting point. Many of the Awakened — those who arrive in Vashrath with no road behind them — first opened their eyes on these beaches and low fields. Others crossed into Vashrath by choice, seeking dominion, escape, a fresh start or conquest. Around the old castle gathered nomads, exiles, subjects brought along by kings, merchants, soldiers and rulers without thrones. First came villages, then outposts, roads, markets, walls, and finally the gateway city.
Geography did the rest. The coast offered fishing, farmland and routes far less lethal than the interior. While other regions of Vashrath demanded brutal crossings, Cripta offered a rare balance of safety, food, trade and defense. For that very reason it was fought over for centuries. Many tried to take the city. Few left a mark. The name that rose above all others was Sangezer.
Government
Sangezer proclaims himself Emperor of Vashrath. Not every realm, city or regional power recognizes the title, yet his influence is undeniable. He turned Cripta into an administrative, military and commercial power — the capital in all but name. The city does not tolerate idleness: whoever lives beneath its walls must produce, serve, trade, fight, heal, build, keep watch, or pay for the privilege of staying.
He is not loved by all, nor acknowledged as a universal sovereign. Even so, many accept his authority for one simple reason: Cripta works. Inside the walls there is food, work, commerce, shelter, healing, protection and opportunity. Beyond them, the forest, the coast, the ruins and the dead fields charge dearly for every mistake.
The Three Forces
Cripta is the greatest crossroads of the Three Forces. None of them rules the city outright, but all keep bases, agents, sympathizers and quiet structures of influence there.
- The Northern Warriors are strong among guards, soldiers, duelists and sellswords: might, discipline, honor and brutality.
- The People of the South thrive among merchants, strategists, scribes and administrators: planning, wealth, defense and knowledge.
- The Wanderers hold the underworld, the roads, the scouts and the informants: movement, secrecy, crossings and favors repaid at the right hour.
In Cripta, allegiance is rarely declared openly. It shows in a discreet emblem, a turn of phrase, or a favor done at exactly the right moment.
Landmarks
- The forward camp — the post before the gates, where many of the Awakened wake up and receive their first care.
- The Gates of Cripta — the symbolic line between civilization and the open world.
- The Crypt Castle — the original fortress, built above the crypt that named the city.
- The Old Crypt — an underground structure tied to the city's origin, almost never entered and surrounded by folklore.
- The central market — the beating heart of trade, where merchants, adventurers, rumors and factions circulate.
- The barracks of Sangezer — the military structure that keeps internal order and holds back the threats nearby.
- The tavern — meeting place of companions, mercenaries, gossip and contracts.
- The clandestine arenas — corners of the underworld where gladiators, criminals and outcasts sell violence.
- Hospital, bank and auction house — the services that make the capital function: healing for the wounded, vaults for the cautious, and a stage for the boldest deals in Vashrath.
- Malora's cabin — a place beyond the common roads, sought out when ordinary healers are no longer enough.
Notable figures
- Sangezer — self-proclaimed Emperor of Vashrath and the greatest political force in Cripta.
- Sirius — commander of the forward camp; his is often the first face the newly Awakened see.
- Cassius — the scribe who sets each newcomer's name into the city's registers.
- The Countess — she knows Cripta's shortcuts, rumors and habits better than almost anyone, and many newcomers owe her their bearings. Some say she came from Kharvoss as a child, but nothing about her past is ever confirmed.
- Malora — a healer on the margin of the official ways, tied to quieter paths of cure, trade and knowledge.
- Sir Redrick, Kaela and Octavius — sellswords of the tavern, willing to march beside anyone with coin and a cause.
