Professions and Crafting

The four crafts of Vashrath — Blacksmith, Armorer, Alchemist and Cook — from gathering materials to forging, tempering and discovery.

The four crafts

In Vashrath, no hero is only a fighter. Every dweller of the Forgotten Realms practices the four crafts from their very first day:

  • Blacksmith — forges weapons.
  • Armorer — forges armor and defensive gear.
  • Alchemist — brews potions.
  • Cook — prepares meals.

There is no choosing one and abandoning the rest, and no paying your way to mastery. The crafts grow through use: every blade forged, every plate hammered, every potion brewed and every meal cooked makes you a little better at it. What a hero can make ends up defining what a hero can survive.

Gathering: materials come from the hunt

Crafting begins beyond the walls. Monsters slain on expeditions yield the raw stuff of every craft — metals for weapons, hides and leathers for armor, gemstones for jewelry, reagents and ingredients for the cauldron and the kitchen.

Two truths govern gathering:

  • Better hunts, better materials. Humble iron and rawhide come from humble hunting grounds; the finest stuff of the realm comes from its deadliest regions. A crafter's ambitions and a hunter's courage rise together.
  • Each craft wants its own harvest. Weaponsmiths chase ores, armorers chase hides, jewelers chase stones, and alchemists chase reagents. Knowing what you intend to make tells you where you ought to be hunting (see /wiki/how-to-play/world-and-travel).

The forge: making equipment

Forging is hands-on work at a real station. You bring the materials, set them into the forge, and shape the piece — the quality of what goes in decides the caliber of what comes out.

Beyond the base piece, a smith can work learned enhancements into equipment. These are taught by scrolls found out in the world: each scroll teaches the secret for one kind of piece, and once learned, it is yours for good. A well-traveled smith's repertoire is a collection of hard-won scrolls — and it is what separates a functional blade from a coveted one.

The forge also runs in reverse: unwanted equipment can be smelted down, returning part of its materials to your stores. Old gear is never worthless to someone who knows the fire.

Tempering: raising quality

Every piece of equipment carries a quality, climbing the realm's ladder from Common up through Magic, Rare and Epic to Legendary. Tempering is the art of pushing a piece up that ladder.

It is done with tempering stones, each attuned to the quality you are reaching for. A tempered piece keeps its identity but sheds its ordinariness — the same sword, reborn sharper. For crafters, tempering is often where the real value lies: the gap between a Common piece and its Legendary self is the gap between shelf stock and a bidding war (see /wiki/how-to-play/economy-and-trade).

Alchemy: the craft of discovery

Alchemy is the most secretive of the four. Ingredients gathered in the world carry hidden effects — and nothing about an ingredient's look tells you what it truly does. The only way to know is to experiment: brew, observe, record.

Every effect you uncover is knowledge you keep. Over time, an alchemist builds a private map of the realm's ingredients that no one else owns, and brewing shifts from gambling to authorship — combining what you know to produce exactly the potion you intend. Some potions act the moment they touch your lips; others walk with you, carrying their effect down the road ahead.

Cooking: the craft of the road

Cooks turn ingredients into meals, and meals are what carry a hero through long ventures — food eaten before the road makes the road survivable. Recipes are learned from scrolls like a smith's secrets, and a cook with a deep recipe book is a quietly powerful ally: the difference between a band that limps home and one that finishes the hunt.

A crafter's habits

  • Never sell materials blindly. What is clutter today is a masterpiece's missing piece tomorrow. The warehouse at your hideout exists for this (see /wiki/how-to-play/hideout-guide).
  • Practice on the cheap. The crafts grow through use — let inexpensive materials pay your tuition.
  • Chase scrolls. Learned secrets are permanent. Few finds in the world repay their price so completely.
  • Craft for the market. Other heroes always need what you can make. The forge and the cauldron are professions in the fullest sense — they feed the crafter first, and the crafter's purse second.
