The Limbo

Vashrath is a timeless world — it exists in every moment and every place at once. Between its lands lie the mists travelers call the Limbo.

A world in every place and in no time

Vashrath is a dystopian world and, above all else, a timeless one. It belongs to no era: it does not take place "before" or "after" anything. It exists in every moment and in every place at the same time. That is why no one can say when anything happened in its history — only that it happened, is happening, and is yet to happen.

It is this nature that makes Vashrath inexhaustible. Because it is timeless, the universe it swallowed is infinite. There one can raise a family, till the land, found a dynasty — everything that exists in our world exists in Vashrath as well. It is, in essence, a mirror of our world: the same, but sealed away — and the place where, to this very day, everything wicked is still sent.

What time does not wear away

The isolation of Vashrath means that whole things arrive exactly as they were — and remain so. Kingdoms banished centuries ago still hold their posts; guards obey orders given by sovereigns long forgotten; constructs carry out duties for which they were built in an age that no longer exists. On the inside, time does not corrode the way it should.

They say there are groves torn out of other worlds and cast here whole, with their ancient trees and their guardians; that there are labyrinths that crossed the portal with their servants, their prisoners, and their secrets. What enters Vashrath rarely leaves — and when it does return, it returns changed.

The mists of the Limbo

Between the known lands lie stretches that travelers avoid: passages where the mist thickens and the world seems to hesitate. They call them the Limbo — the in-between place of a world that is, itself, an in-between. Stories are told of caravans swallowed by a fog that should not have been there, of entire companies vanishing without a trace.

Some claim that those who enter the Limbo rarely return the same. There are accounts of survivors who came back years later without having aged a single day, unable to say what they saw on the inside. Whether the Limbo is a place, a rift, or simply the timelessness of Vashrath itself spilling over, no one knows for certain. Few who have crossed it have the courage — or the memory — to speak of it.

The purpose that never changed

At its heart, the purpose of Vashrath has remained the same since the very first banishment: to seal away all the evil of the world. Dark, endless, and forgotten, it goes on receiving everything the realms above refuse to look at. And, timeless as it is, it will bear that burden forever — in every moment, in every place, at the same time.

The cities and regions the banished raised upon these lands are told in Sangezer and the Throne of Cripta and in The Known Regions.
