The Companions

The mercenaries of Vashrath — who they are, where they are hired, and the sellswords, healers and outcasts who fight beside the realm's heroes.

No hero survives the Forgotten Realms alone for long. The deep incursions, the cursed forests and the shifting corridors of places like Cnossos are not meant to be walked by a single blade — and so, in every city of Vashrath, there are halls where coin buys company. The men and women found there are called companions: mercenaries who march beside adventurers into the places everyone else avoids.

What a Companion Is

A companion is not a servant and not a soldier under orders. Each one is an identity — the sum of a race, a history and a way of fighting that belongs to them alone. Sir Redrick swings his war-axe with the fury of a dwarf who has outlived his own memory of home. Octavius raises shield and sword with the calm of a veteran who has already survived everything worth fearing. Malora arrives with potions, spells and curses, and no one calls her kind. Hiring a companion means buying their blade, never their story — that, they carry with them.

They are found at the contract halls of the cities, where mercenaries wait for work worth their price. A wandering hero chooses who marches at their side, and the choice matters: the same expedition feels very different with the quiet vigilance of Garran, the Noble watching the trail than with the explosive inventions of Odrik Emberforge rattling in the packs.

Companions do not grow on their own. A mercenary who fights beside you today is the fighter they already became through their own life; when a hero needs someone stronger, they seek out the same mercenary at a higher rank of their craft — a harder bargain, and a deadlier ally.

The Many Faces of the Trade

The variety among companions mirrors the variety of Vashrath itself. There are pure warriors, like Aldric Stonewall, who once held the gate of Pedra Clara alone, and Ragnar Frostborn, born during a blizzard and rumored to carry the blood of giants. There are hunters and trackers — Corvin Blackthorn, the bounty hunter who only accepts guilty prey; Theron Vale, who studies monsters the way scholars study books; Lucan Greywolf, who returned from the Limbo without having aged a day.

There are those who heal and those who curse. Elara Dawn left a corrupted temple carrying only her solar scepter. Isolde Ravenshade died defending her monastery and woke three nights later, bound to the souls she could not save. Evelyne Crowmoor speaks little since a pact with the spirits of the moors claimed her voice, and Mireya Hollow brews antidotes for her allies and very different flasks for her enemies.

The Empire's fallen and faithful walk this road too: Dante, the smiling heir whose gaze unsettles veterans; Valeria Storm, the captain who refused to attack refugees and lost her command for it; Darius Ashford, the ruined duelist who fights the duels nobles are too cowardly to fight themselves; Lyssandra Vale, the strategist who betrayed her own house to save a city.

And beyond them, dozens more: the runic warrior Astrid Icevein, fleeing the North that considers her its property; the shadow-elf assassin Nyra Blackveil, dismantling the order that raised her; the winter druid Kaelen Frost, guarding the frozen remnants of a stolen forest; the ash-mage Selene Ashwood; the shieldbearer Freya Ironwood, whose shield is cut from the last tree her clan ever grew; the lancer known only as Arch; the shapeshifting tracker Fenrir Skall; the gladiator Varek Ironhand, who bought his freedom with an iron fist; the rapier-quick Kaela of Cripta's streets; and the quiet healer Mother Seraphine, of whom little is known beyond the comfort her presence brings to the wounded.

Choosing Your Company

There is no wrong companion — only the wrong companion for the road ahead. Read their stories, look at the weapons they carry, and decide whose past you want standing between you and the dark. Every one of them came to Vashrath by a different door, and those doors are worth knowing: see Companion Origins for the lineages, factions and broken orders that shaped them.
