Bestiary of the Witch's Forest

The cursed creatures of the Black Forest, from the Iron Raven to the House of Legs and Baba Yaga herself, mistress of every trail.

The Black Forest is the realm of Baba Yaga, an ancient entity who has walked its depths since long before the coming of the mortal kingdoms. Every cursed creature of the region exists by her will, direct or indirect: some serve her out of devotion, others out of fear. None dares defy her.

The forest trails change direction to lead the unwary astray, and the witch's walking hut appears wherever the woods desire. Those who enter her domain rarely return the same.

The Cursed of the Forest

Iron Raven

They watch every path of the forest. According to old legends, they were created when Baba Yaga captured common ravens and replaced their bones with enchanted metal. Their feathers carry a dark sheen like oxidized iron, and their eyes store everything they witness — no secret stays hidden for long, for thousands of these creatures keep constant watch over her domains. When an intruder enters the region, they are usually the first to find him. They strike with metal beak and talons.

Faceless Maiden

No one knows who the first one was: some say she was a young woman who tried to steal Baba Yaga's secrets; others, a princess who vanished centuries ago. As punishment, the witch tore away her face, her name and every memory — and the emptiness of that curse became contagious. The Maidens drift along the paths looking for identities to steal; their whispers confuse travelers and their words erase memories. Many have defeated one only to realize they no longer remembered their own past.

Cauldron's Child

Creatures born directly of Baba Yaga's experiments: human bones, ashes, monster blood and forbidden herbs mixed in enormous cauldrons during ancient rituals. When the mixture comes to life, a grotesque mass of hardened flesh and magic emerges, with no family, no history and no purpose beyond obeying its creator. Despite their monstrous appearance they are utterly loyal — many serve as guards of the walking hut or as executors of the witch's will. They fight with brute strength and alchemical mutations.

Cursed Woodsman

Ordinary men who made their living cutting timber at the edges of the forest, they ignored the warnings about Baba Yaga's lands and pushed ever deeper in search of rare trees. The forest answered: little by little they began to hear voices among the trees, to suffer nightmares, to lose their reason. Some disappeared; others returned transformed into violent servants of the woods. Now they wander carrying the same woodsman's axes — but they no longer cut trees. They hunt travelers.

Lost Witch

Not every witch of the forest was born a servant of Baba Yaga: many came seeking forbidden knowledge — healers, alchemists or scholars who believed themselves capable of learning the old sorceress's secrets. Few survived the meeting. Those who remain became shadows of who they were, stripped of their former identities, existing as disciples deformed by the forest's magic. They still carry fragments of the knowledge they sought, but their sanity was consumed long ago. They wield profane witchcraft.

The Guardians of the Deep Woods

Knight of Roots

Centuries ago, this warrior swore to protect a village on the borders of the forest. When hunger and disease began to destroy his people, he sought help from Baba Yaga, who agreed — for a price he accepted without knowing it. The next night the village was saved, but the warrior vanished forever. Roots grew through his armor, pierced his flesh and fused with his body. Today he exists as an eternal guardian, unable to die or abandon his post — he still protects the forest's paths, but has long forgotten the name of the people he tried to save. His sword has been claimed by roots; he is more than three hundred years old.

House of Legs

The legendary walking hut of Baba Yaga is no ordinary building: the house itself possesses consciousness and hunger. Its walls are living wood fed by ancient magic, and enormous deformed legs let it cross mountains, swamps and forests. They say it chooses its victims long before meeting them — doors appear where none should exist, windows watch travelers in the night, and whole trails change direction to lead the unwary to its mistress. Inside there are corridors larger than the outside would allow, rooms that trade places and stairways leading nowhere. Many believe it is as old as the witch herself. It defends itself with living structure and spatial magic.

Baba Yaga

Long before the mortal kingdoms arrived, Baba Yaga already walked the depths of the Black Forest. She is no simple witch, but an entity thousands of years old who crosses generations, wars and civilizations without aging. In some stories she devours children; in others she offers wisdom to lost heroes. She follows no human law: she rewards the prudent, destroys the arrogant and collects secrets the way others collect gold. Her walking hut travels impossible trails between worlds, and those who enter her domain rarely return the same — many disappear, others come back decades later without having aged a day. In Vashrath she has become the absolute mistress of the forest, and every cursed creature of the region exists by her will. Her weapon is primordial witchcraft; her origin, unknown.
